The Impact Investing Podcast
This podcast series helps you to increase the impact of your savings. If you’re a retail investor who wants to make a positive difference with your money, you’ve come to the right place!
Let’s start with the basics. How is sustainable investing different from normal or “traditional” investing? In short, whereas traditional investing has only one aim (maximizing profit), sustainable investing considers both financial returns and ethical considerations in investment decisions, aiming to generate profit AND create positive social change. But doesn’t this sound too good to be true? Can I grow my wealth while saving the planet? How does that even work? Let's dive into this conversation with Nicola Koch, Head of Retail Investing at 2DII.

Let's talk about greenwashing and how “green” financial products can have a positive impact on climate change. The term “greenwashing” has been appearing on the news quite a lot so far. In June, for example, one case made the headlines: "Consumer groups from 19 countries complained about seventeen airlines making false claims about the sustainability of flying." Very well-known companies were basically caught greenwashing, including Ryanair and Air France. The financial industry is no exception. To get a better sense of the scale of the situation, we've invited Ties Gijzel from Follow the Money onto the show.

This episode 6 will dig into the topic of impact-washing with a guest we discovered in episode 2, Lisa Scheitza. The latest progress report on greenwashing of the European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs), published in June 2023, highlighted the current risk of impact-washing as high. The document, which is 89 pages long, outlines the main issues about false claims when it comes to impact. For example, some companies don’t clarify where exactly the impact is achieved, others make exaggerated claims, and others don’t explain the importance of intentionality, additionally, and impact measurement — all of the aspects which, by this point in our podcast, we know are crucial. If you want to know more, you can find the report on ESMA (European Securities and Markets Authority) website. You may also discover the impact database on MyFairMoney to get a better overview of financial products with high-impact potential.

Together we will delve into a very powerful mechanism we, as retail investors, can use to maximise our impact potential on secondary markets. It’s called investor stewardship.
